FOURTH GENERATION

14. Charles Wesley Slover (42) (43)(44) Photo was born on 22 Sep 1868 in Veal's Station, Parker, TX, USA. (45)(46) He died on 5 Sep 1943 in Lubbock, Lubbock, TX, USA. He has reference number 14. He was buried in Tahoka, Lynn, TX. Charles and Ferbie lived in Bowie, Texas until 1898, then moved to Dimmitt, Texas. Then moved to Tahoka, Texas about 1906. They belonged to the Methodist church. They filed a land claim in West Texas. He hauled wood from the "breaks". He froze his foot trying to save a house, where he spent the night, when the family was away. All the children were home for their Golden Wedding in 1940. Each of the girls taught school and all the boys were farmers. All the children were substantial members of their communities. All but one attended college.

From their daughter "When mother and father first came to the Plains, they lived in a half-dug-out. The dug-out portion of the house was used for the kitchen, consequently, it was occupied most of the time. One day, just as mamma finished washing the dinner dishes, she saw on the earthen shelf, where the dug-out wall joined the wooden one, the very biggest rattle-snake she had ever seen. Her first thought was of the children. She said, "Children, go upstairs, close the door and stay, until I kill the snake." The children started, looked back and saw their pet cat with three kittens under the table. They went back for them. The snake, with a sickening thud, dropped to the dirt floor and started crawling toward the door. "Go quick, leave the cats," pleaded mamma. What if it should get between the children and the door? It seemed an hour but really, it was less than a minute until the children with their pets beat the snake to the door. With a poker and a broom, mamma killed the rattler, then went to see about the children. They with their cats, were huddled in our large rocker."

When the railroad came to Lynn, railroad crews made their headquarter at the Slover windmill." p. 373 "Grass Roots Upside Down" He was married to Ferbie Lou Sweazea on 1 Oct 1890 in Bellview, Clay Co.
