3588. Jacob Janse SCHERMERHORN ⁽³⁷⁴⁾ was born in 1622 in Noord, Waterland, Holland. He died in 1688 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY. He has reference number 8DF9-G3. He has Ancestral File number 82MH-MP. Jacob Janse Schermerhorn was a prominent trader in Baeverwyck in 1648, when he was arrested by Stuyvesant on a charge of selling arms and ammunition to the Indians. His books and papers were seized and himself removed a prisoner to Ft. Amsterdam where he was sentenced to banishment for five years and confiscation of his property. By the Interference of some leading citizens the first part of the sentence was struck out but his property was totally lost. These proceedings against Schermerhorn formed, subsequently, a ground for complaint against Stuyvesant to the State-General.

The Schermerhorn family conducted a shipping business between Albany and New York as early as 1681 and as late as 1702. This may account for Lucas' residence and marriage in N.Y. City. He removed to Esopus, Dutchess Co. between 1702-1706. In 1711, he was living in Raritan, N.J. where his brother, Ryer, had a substantial property. In 1715, Lucas' name appears on the muster-roll of Capt. Thos. Farmer's Reg. of N.J. Militia and through this service Mrs. A.R. Granberg of Amarillo, Texas became a charter member of the Amarillo Chapter of Colonial Dames of the 17th century.

In 1725, Lucas was one of the three ruling Church Masters of the Readington, R.D. Church. This Lucas Schermerhorn family was the "lost branch" of the Schermerhorn Genealogy by Richard Schermerhorn, until the family records were found on the backs of two old maps, now in Rutgers Library, New Brunswick, N.J. These maps were from a book printed in Amsterdam 1647-8 and are now pasted into a scrapbook of papers relating to Readington and vicinity.
