He died on 14 Aug 1908 in Dimmit, Castro, TX.(99) He served in the military 1865 & 1866 in Parker County, TX. (100) Wm. Slover is listed in Vol. V of Texas Ranger Service Records 1847 - 1900 Page 111. Shows Wm. was commanded by L.L. Tackitt in Minute men. Lists time of service as two terms of 30 days service in 1865 and 1866. He served in the military Btwn 1861-1865 in Spaight's regiment. (101) He has reference number 28. Family Legend
The family history says:
William and Emeline were members of the Cumberland church. He was a farmer and for a few years was in the grocery business.
In 1870 they moved to Clay county Texas and later to Montague county where he was the sheriff in 1887.
They moved to Castro county, Texas in 1900.
He served under General Robert E. Lee in the Civil War.
He was a Mason. (Selover - Slover Family History 1682-1941 p 64)

Background Information
The 1867 Voters Roll of Texas shows that William had lived in Parker County for 8 years, Texas for 8 years, and in the precinct for 1 year.

The 1850 Federal census shows the family in Travis County, Texas, Household #391. The surname name is spelled Slovi. Williams is shown as 6 years old. Family legend says the family moved to Texas in 1848.

The 1880 Federal census shows W.A. Slover (age 36) and family living in Precinct 4, Clay county, Texas.

Military Service
W. A. Slover served in Co. B., Griffin's Battalion, Infantry. Both of these companies were commanded by Spaight. Private William A. Slover is shown in Houston, Texas according to Capt. McReynolds. This shows William as 18 years old and his muster in to date March 31, 1862. He had pneumonia and was in Houston General Hospital in 1862. He is also shown as sick and in Parker County on sick leave since Sept. 1, 1862. At one point he was paid $50.00, and is show present in Houston from Feb 28, 1863 to June 30, 1863. It appears that he returned from Parker County in March of 1864 and is at Ft. Manhassett in September 1864.

Griffin's Battalion, Texas Infantry (Griffin's Regiment) (21st Infantry)
Griffin's Infantry Battalion was assembled during the early summer of 1862 with six companies. The unit served in the Trans-Mississippi Department along the Texas coast and at Galveston, then in November, 1864, merged into the 21st Texas Infantry Regiment. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonel William H. Griffin and Major H. A. Hamner.

National Archive records show W. A. Slover serving in Co. C , 21 Texas Infantry (Spaight's regiment). This also shows this company formed by the consolidation of four companies of Griffin's Battalion Texas Infantry with six companies of the 11th Battalion Texas Infantry. He is shown as a Private - card numbers 50706730 and as a Reg't Teamster on the regimental return for the month of January 1865. This company was formed November 20, 1864.

21st Regiment, Texas Infantry
21st Infantry Regiment was organized during the spring of 1864 by consolidating the 11th (Spaight's) Texas Cavalry and Infantry Battalion and Griffin's Texas Infantry Battalion. Serving in the Trans-Mississippi Department, the unit was stationed at Sabine Pass with 14 officers and 235 men. Later it moved to Louisiana, then returned to Texas. It disbanded prior to the surrender in June, 1865. Its commanders were Colonel Ashley W. Spaight, Lieutenant Colonel William M. Griffin, and Major Felix C. McReynolds.


Fort Manhassett was a quickly built earthen fort located at a point six and one-half miles southwest of Sabine Pass, Texas, on the beach road to Sea Rim State Park. The fort was used to protect the Texas coast from Union invasion. A more complete story is located at:
